The morning sunlight streamed through the window as Test Subject 1 slowly opened their eyes.
They stretched lazily and looked around the quiet room.
“Hello?” Test Subject 1 called out. “Is anyone here?”
A moment later, footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Test Subject 2 appeared at the doorway and leaned against the frame.
“Oh. You’re awake already,” Test Subject 2 said.
Test Subject 1 frowned. “Of course I’m awake. You said we were starting the experiment today.”
Test Subject 2 hesitated.
“Well… about that.”
“About that?” Test Subject 1 repeated.
Test Subject 2 scratched their head awkwardly. “This is actually just a test chapter.”
“A test chapter?”
“Yes,” Test Subject 2 nodded seriously. “The author needed something to test formatting. Paragraph spacing, dialogue, and how everything looks on the blog.”
Test Subject 1 stared in disbelief.
“So none of this matters?”
“Not really.”
Test Subject 1 sighed and leaned back in the chair.
“I woke up early for nothing.”
Test Subject 2 chuckled.
“On the bright side, at least we exist long enough to fill Chapter 1.”
Test Subject 1 considered this.
“…That’s strangely comforting.”
The room fell quiet for a moment.
Then Test Subject 1 suddenly leaned forward.
“Wait.”
“Yes?”
“Does this mean Chapter 2 will have actual plot?”
Test Subject 2 shrugged.
“We’ll find out when the author decides to write it.”
And with that uncertain promise, the test chapter came to an end.
